| 5. March 6, 1989 -- La Salle 71, St. Peter's 58: My mom wouldn't let me use the car in the snow, so in order to get to the Meadowlands from Brooklyn, I took the subway, then the bus. But I had to do a live pre-game report on WRTI's Monday night sports show, and was running late to the stadium, so the report unbeknownst to everybody was done from a pay phone at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Just getting to the game was a relief, and since it was the MAAC Championship game, it was worth it. La Salle held a 34-22 lead at halftime and the Peacocks never got to within six in the second half. Lionel Simmons led the Explorers with 29 points while Doug Overton added 22. 4. November 18, 1989 -- Temple 36, Rutgers 33: My last marching band game was Temple's last chance. If the Owls lose this game, they go winless for the season -- they couldn't even defeat Northern Illinois at home earlier in the year. The Owls pulled out the contest, finishing the year 1-10. 3. September 16, 1989 -- Penn State 42, Temple 3: The geeks in the Temple marching band were seriously considering not going to the game -- after we had already arrived at the stadium -- because of the heavy rain. I mean, c'mon, how often do you get to sit front row at a Penn State football game in State College? We did go to the game, but because of the rain, I was told not to bring my cymbals. So, I just enjoyed the game. The game itself was nothing to write home about, but the atmosphere was everything I'd hoped it would be. Oh, and it didn't rain during the game. 2. February 3rd, 1989 -- Pennsylvania 78, Dartmouth 77: Another game when they stormed the court at the Palestra. Penn. never held a lead until Jerry Simon's layup off a rebound with seven seconds left gave the Quakers the advantage. Even more incredible is the Quakers trailed by six points with just 36 seconds left. 1. April 29th, 1989 -- New York Knicks 107, Philadelphia 76ers 106: The Knicks stole this game to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five first-round NBA series. The Knicks trailed by 10 points with just 2:12 remaining but reeled off the last 11 points to win. Trent Tucker's three-point bucket with 11 seconds left capped the rally. The first game of this series two nights earlier was my first game at Madison Square Garden, where I have attended more sporting events than anywhere else. |
