1990
Top 5 sporting events from 1990
5.  May 11th, 1990 -- Philadelphia 76ers 118, Chicago Bulls 112:  This was my first second round playoff game.  The
76ers, who would pull out their only win of this series in this game, jumped out to a large lead, but their 24-point
fourth-quarter advantage was trimmed down to just three with 54 seconds left after Michael Jordan hit a three-point shot.
The Sixers saved themselves from the foul line -- hitting 5-of-6 shots.
4.  March 4th, 1990 -- Rutgers 80, Rhode Island 79:  Rutgers had the loudest crowd at the A-10 tournament and it
probably made a difference.  Earl Duncan's driving layup with two seconds left gave Rutgers the win in the quarterfinals of
the A-10 tournament.  Needless to say, the Palestra exploded -- again.
3.  October 15th, 1990 -- Philadelphia Eagles 32, Minnesota Vikings 24:  My job was to be the post-game producer
of the WIP Eagles broadcast -- so I got to meet and work with Merrill Reese -- Whoopee!!  It was one of the first times I
had worked in any capacity on a sports broadcast for a professional event.  The game itself was a thriller as well.  The
Vikings led 24-15 late in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles scored two touchdowns and a field goal in the last four
minutes to win.
2.   February 6th, 1990 -- Penn. 51, Princeton 50:  Another Penn. game -- another game in which they stormed the court
After Paul Chambers was fouled with about two seconds left on the clock and Penn down by one, he went to the foul
line for a one-on-one (even though it looked like he was in the act of shooting).  He missed the first foul shot, but Hassan
Duncombe tipped home the rebound to allow Penn to steal the game.  It'll always be in question whether Chambers was
in the act of shooting when he was fouled, but I guess we'll never know what really happened.
1.  March 8th, 1990 -- Temple 53, UMass 51:  Temple had missed the NCAA tournament the year before after making
the big dance the previous five years.  The Owls had to win this game -- the A-10 championship contest -- in order to
get back to the tourney.  The game was close all the way, but the Owls prevailed.  I had the best seat in the house -- my
job was to hold the shotgun microphone for TV right on the floor at midcourt -- it can't get better than that, especially for
a game to determine an automatic NCAA tournament bid.  Mark Macon had a game-high 20 points for the Owls, who
played only six players in the game and had four starters go all 40 minutes.
Strange facts from 1990
1.  May 11th, 1990 was one of only two times I have ever seen Jordan play.  I also saw him play on December
13th, 2002.
2.  The October 20th football game between Virginia Tech and Temple is the first time I've seen the Hokies play a game
and represents the only time before 2017 I would see Virginia Tech lose a sporting event.  After this date, Virginia Tech
would win nine straight games (All time --- football:  5-1, basketball:  4-1).
