1995
Top 5 sporting events from 1995
5.  April 22nd, 1995 -- Philadelphia Flyers 4, New Jersey Devils 3 (OT):  The Flyers clinch the division as John
LeClair scores 54 seconds in to overtime at the Meadowlands.  After going to 48 Flyers games in Philadelphia prior to
moving to New York in December, 1994, and seeing them miss the playoffs five straight years, it was nice to be present
for this Flyers milestone.  The Flyers had clinched a playoff spot earlier in the week.
4.  September 10th, 1995 -- Indianapolis Colts 27, New York Jets 24 (OT):  This was not supposed to be a good
season for the Jets, and this game set the tone for the season.  New York jumped out to a 24-3 lead in the third quarter,
then the roof caved in.  Tony Bennett returned a fumble 32 yards and "captain comeback" Jim Harbaugh tied the game
with two touchdown passes.  In overtime, Mike Cofer won it with a 52-yard field goal.  After the game, Boomer
Esiason literally had nothing to say, answering questions at the press conference with short, quick answers like "I don't
know, next question," or "I'll have to check the film."
3.  September 4th, 1995 -- Dallas Cowboys 35, New York Giants 0:  Emmitt Smith stole the show.  He ran for 163
yards and four touchdowns, the first score a 60-yard jaunt that was his first rushing attempt of the game.  I've been going to
Jets and Giants games on a regular basis since 1995 after moving back to the New York City area and this Monday Night
affair served as an appropriate curtain opener for a new era.  It was also Phil Simms night as they retired his number.
2.  December 13th, 1995 -- St. Peter's 61, Seton Hall 59:  Mike Frensley's jumper was the game-winning shot as the
Peacocks pulled off the upset at the Meadowlands.  It was the first time SPC had beaten the Pirates since 1985 and the
Peacocks haven't beaten them since.  They play every year at the Meadowlands.  I was the scorer for St. Peter's at this
game, and it was a good prelude to six years affiliated with St. Peter's College athletics.   Frensley finished the game with a
team-high 17 points.
1.  June 13th, 1995 -- New Jersey Devils 4, Philadelphia Flyers 2:  For whatever reason, I got goose bumps after this
game was over...probably because it was nearly one year after the Rangers won the cup.  The Devils clinched the
Eastern Conference title with this win and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals.  Fittingly, it was against the Flyers, whom
I covered in Philadelphia for many years but failed to make the playoffs for five years -- finally qualifying after I moved
to NY.  This was also the first game of this series the home team won -- I was also in attendance for the Flyers 4-2
game four victory.
Honorable mentions
1.  June 10th, 1995 -- Philadelphia Flyers 4, New Jersey Devils 2:  The Devils score the first goal, but Philadelphia's
victory in this fourth game of the best-of-seven NHL Eastern Conference Final ties the series.  The road team wins the first
five games of this series before the Devils clinch the series in game 6 at home.
Strange facts from 1995
1.  In the Jets first two home games I attended, the second one being the September 10th game against the Colts, New
York blew a double digit lead and lost.
2.  The September 16th Monmouth - St. Peter's contest was the first college football game I attended that Temple did
not play in.
