1994
Top 5 sporting events from 1994
5.  August 11th, 1994 -- Philadelphia Phillies 2, New York Mets 1 (15 innings):  The New York Mets and
Philadelphia Phillies did whatever they could to prolong the strike deadline.  But the game had to end sometime and
finally did, in the rain, on Ricky Jordan's single off of Mauro Gozzo.  This was the last game of the year for both teams
and the last day of baseball overall for the year as the strike began the next day and wiped out the entire postseason.
4.  March 20th, 1994 -- Boston College 75, North Carolina 72:  Ninth-seeded Boston College's upset victory left
the top-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels out of the sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1980.
BC never trailed in the second half, but needless to say, it was close the entire way.  Gerrod Abram scored 21 points
to lead the Eagles.  This was a similar situation to 1992 -- Had Temple been able to defeat Indiana in the earlier game
of this doubleheader, the Owls would've played an inferior BC team in the sweet 16 down in Miami, and then anything
could've happened against Florida.  But again, no dice.
3.  May 31st, 1994 --  Vancouver Canucks 3, New York Rangers 2 (OT):  This was another one of those games
where walking in to the building was enough of a thrill.  The Rangers were going for their first Stanley Cup victory since
1940, but it was Vancouver that would win on Greg Adams goal in the last minute of overtime.  The Rangers would
come back to win game two to tie the series.
2.  June 9th, 1994 -- Vancouver Canucks 6, New York Rangers 3:  Everybody was ready to celebrate as the
Rangers were on the verge of winning the Stanley Cup, but having attended practice earlier in the day up in Rye, I had
a bad feeling about this game.  Mike Richter just didn't look sharp.  I was right.  Vancouver jumped out to a 3-0 lead
in the third period, although the Rangers had a goal by Esa Tikkanen disallowed because of a penalty.  Then things
went nuts; the Rangers tied the game with three goals of their own in less than six minutes.  But just 29 seconds after the
Rangers tied the game, Dave Babych scored the game winner for Vancouver.  Eight of the nine goals in this game were
scored in the third period.  Pavel Bure had two goals and added an assist.  For the next five days, I was living in fear of the
Rangers losing this series.  It had taken over my brain waves.
1.  June 14th, 1994 -- New York Rangers 3, Vancouver Canucks 2:  "The Rangers have won the Stanley Cup and I
was here to see it."  That's what I said to myself -- or yelled out loud -- when it happened.  This is, and probably will
always be, the best sporting event I've ever been to.  The Rangers jumped out to a 3-1 second period lead, and then
held on after Vancouver cut the lead in half on Trevor Linden's second goal of the game.  The third period was as tense
a period of hockey as I've ever seen.  There was nothing like being in the locker room after the game -- I did get
splashed with champagne and I did drink from the Stanley Cup.  I said if I never go to another sporting event again, I'd
be satisfied with what I've seen...well, I've been to quite a few sporting events since then, but this was fulfilling.
Honorable mentions
1.  June 2nd, 1994 --  New York Rangers 3, Vancouver Canucks 1:  The Rangers tie the Stanley Cup Finals at
one-game apiece.  Glenn Anderson's goal in the second period breaks a 1-1 tie.
Strange facts from 1994
1.  The 1994 Stanley Cup Finals is the only time I would see the Rangers compete in the playoffs until 2006.
2.  The Seton Hall - Villanova game from December 5th is the only college basketball game I attended that entire season.
