Top 5 sporting events from 1997

5. January 19th, 1997 -- St. Peter's Peahens 109, Canisius Golden Griffins 104 (OT): Heather Fiore stole the
show for Canisius, scoring a MAAC record 46 points, and in the process, became Canisius' all-time leading scorer (at the
time). And the game was on the MAAC TV Network, so she chose the right game to accomplish those feats. However,
St. Peter's prevailed in OT, and would go on to win the MAAC regular season and tournament championship.
4. November 23rd, 1997 -- NY Jets 23, Minnesota Vikings 21: A lot of energy was in the building as the NY Jets
were vying for sole possession of first place in the AFC East -- having never won the division in team history. Leon
Johnson's 66-yard punt return in the first quarter helped the Jets jump out to a 23-7 lead, but the Vikings in the fourth
fought back with two touchdowns. A two-point conversion attempt on the second touchdown failed, however, as
Robert Smith was tackled in the backfield. The Jets improved to 8-4 but it was Minnesota which had the last laugh.
The Jets missed the playoffs and the Vikings knocked the Giants out of the playoffs in the first round.
3. November 2nd, 1997 -- NY Jets 19, Baltimore Ravens 16 (OT): It rained most of the game, but not when John
Hall kicked a 37-yard field goal in overtime to give the Jets the victory. Vinny Testaverde, who would lead the Jets to
the AFC Championship game the next season, tied the game for Baltimore with three seconds left in regulation when he
threw a 16-yard TD pass to Derrick Alexander. Hall finished with four field goals.
2. February 28th - March 2nd, 1997 -- Empire State Winter Games in Lake Placid, NY: In reality, I flew in to
Lake Placid on Feb. 26th and didn't fly back until Monday, March 3rd. This does represent the only time I've been to
events in Luge, Figure Skating and Alpine Skiing. And anybody that wants to fly me to Lake Placid on a business trip
is more than welcome to. My job was to write stories on the games for one of PR Newswire's clients -- the NewYork
Lottery -- the primary sponsor of the games. The biggest "name" competitor at the games was Olympian Robert
Pipkins, who won his fourth straight National Luge championship. While the events themselves were nothing special,
albeit different, and were sparsely attended, the setting was awesome.
1. December 13th, 1997 -- New York Giants 30, Washington Redskins 10: The New York Giants clinched the
NFC Eastern Division with this rout of the Washington Redskins -- and there were plenty of NFC East Championship
hats in the locker room to prove it. After covering the Giants and Jets on a regular basis in 1995 and 1996, and seeing
some pretty dismal football in the process, we finally had a winner. The Giants forced six turnovers and raced out to a
17-0 lead en route to the victory.
1. The May 6th Minnesota Twins - NY Yankees contest represented the first Major League Baseball game I worked
that the Philadelphia Phillies didn't play in. It also represented my first NY Yankees game -- meaning that I had now seen
every New York team play at least once.
