Top 5 sporting events from 1998

5. November 11th, 1998 -- Temple Owls 59, Wake Forest Demon Deacons 48: Temple wins the Ikon Classic at
Madison Square Garden with a comeback victory over Wake Forest. Rasheed Brokenborough scored 16 points to
help the Owls erase a 16-point deficit.
4. April 28th, 1998 -- Miami Heat 91, New York Knicks 85: The Knicks weren't given much of a chance in this first
round playoff series against Miami. Smarting from 1997's heartbreaking playoff loss to the Heat when the Knicks blew
a 3-1 lead, New York would have to try for revenge without Patrick Ewing who was injured. But the Knicks managed
to salvage a split in the first two games in Miami, setting the stage for this game 3 at MSG. Miami led most of the way,
leading by as much as 14 points in the third quarter and allowing the Knicks to close to within only four points with 1:23
left in the game. Veshon Lenard scored a playoff career-high 28 points while his backcourt mate Tim Hardaway
contributed 27.
3. April 30th, 1998 -- New York Knicks 90, Miami Heat 85: It was Wrestlemania at MSG starring Alonzo Mourning
in the red corner and Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy in the blue. A scuffle at the end of this game between Mourning and
Larry Johnson led to a fracas, and Van Gundy grabbing Mourning's leg in his attempt to break up the fight. Next thing you
know he's dangling from his leg kind of like he's Mourning's kid brother. The Knicks came out on top in more ways than
one when all was said and done. They tied the series, 2-2, and would face the Heat in the decisive game 5 without having
to deal with the suspended Mourning. Allan Houston and Johnson led the Knicks with 18 points who trailed by as many as
nine points in the second quarter, but closed out the half on a 12-3 run to head in to the locker room tied at 47-apiece.
2. December 6th, 1998 -- New York Jets 32, Seattle Seahawks 31: For the Jets in their march towards the AFC
Eastern division title, this game was supposed to be an afterthought. But it took a blown call by embattled NFL Referee
Phil Luckett to hand the Jets the win. With the Jets facing a 4th-and-goal from the Seattle five-yard line in the closing
stages of the fourth quarter, Vinny Testaverde appeared to be short of the goal line on his QB sneak attempt. Luckett
was quoted as saying that the head linesman made an immediate touchdown call without a delay......but spare me the
details. He was short, clearly. Nevertheless, the Jets had completed their 13-point comeback effort. Testaverde
finished the day completing 42-of-63 passes for 418 yards and two touchdowns plus one "rushing." Joey Galloway had
touchdown receptions of 57 and 70 yards.
1. December 13th, 1998 -- New York Giants 20, Denver Broncos 16: So much for the Broncos attempt at an
undefeated season. Denver entered the game with a 13-0 record, but Kent Graham's 37-yard touchdown pass to
Amani Toomer with 48 seconds left in the game ended the dream. There was some question over whether Toomer was
in bounds or not (he was close to the back of the end zone) but it was clear he was in. The Giants winning drive started
on their own 14-yard line with 1:49 to play. This time John Elway was on the other sideline as the Giants mounted their
version of "the drive."
1. The January 9th game between Princeton and Yale is the first game I've seen two Ivy League schools play in that
wasn't at The Palestra in Philadelphia.

At the Ikon Classic in Madison Square
Garden...November 10th, 1998. This is, I
believe, the only picture in existence with
me wearing glasses. It was taken without
me knowing it.
