| 5. May 12th, 2000 -- Miami Heat 77, New York Knicks 76 (OT): Anthony Carter's fadeaway one-hander with 2.2 seconds left in the extra period gives Miami a 2-1 series lead in this best-of-seven series. Patrick Ewing had forced overtime with a 17-foot jumper with just 2.6 seconds left in regulation, then the Knicks led by as much as 75-71 in OT. Ewing's foul shot with 13.7 seconds remaining in OT gave the Knicks a 76-75 before Carter's game-winning shot from the corner, which may have passed over the top of the backboard before going in. The teams' combined total of 153 points is the lowest combined score in an NBA playoff overtime game. 4. September 16th, 2000 -- Virginia Tech Hokies 49, Rutgers Scarlet Knights 0: I felt like a foreigner, an outsider, when traveling with the Rutgers team down to Blacksburg, Va. It was only three weeks earlier when I was hired to engineer all the Rutgers home and away football radio broadcasts and this was my first game working solo. After going to school at Temple University, then working with that school consistently since graduating in 1991, I felt like I had entered unchartered territory -- Well actually, we flew a charter flight to Blacksburg, but Virginia Tech was unchartered territory for me -- I had never been to a college football game outside the Northeast part of the U.S. I just prayed that everything with the broadcast worked, which it did, even saying to myself that if I wasn't cut out for this job at least I got down to Virginia Tech once in my life. 3. March 10th, 2000 -- St. John's Red Storm 58, Miami Hurricanes 57: A wild finish between these teams in the semifinal round of the Big East tournament saw St. John's pull it out en route to winning the tournament. The Red Storm led for most of the second half but Miami pulled to within one point, 56-55 on a Johnny Hemsley three-pointer with 1:05 left. The Hurricanes finally took the lead with just 7.6 seconds left on Mario Bland's two free throws but Anthony Glover countered with two free throws of his own for St. John's with only :2.2 seconds remaining. However, a brilliant inbounds pass on Miami's final chance forced Lavor Postell to foul Leroy Hurd. Hurd would miss the front end of a one-on-one to allow the Red Storm to hold on. Adding to the excitement of this game were the Miami cheerleaders, otherwise known as the "sunsationals," who everybody cheered on anytime they came out on the court to do their thing. 2. May 19th, 2000 -- New York Knicks 72, Miami Heat 70: The Knicks stage their biggest playoff comeback since 1970 as New York squares this second-round series with Miami at three-games apiece and forces a deciding game seven. With the Knicks trailing by a point in the second quarter, Miami goes on a 22-5 run to open up a 43-25 lead. However, New York would rally in the third quarter, going on a 13-3 spurt to cut the lead to five. The Knicks would finally tie the game at 70-apiece on two Chris Childs' foul shots and would take their only lead since the first quarter when Allan Houston nails two foul shots with 18 seconds remaining to finish with a team-high 21 points. Anthony Carter, who won game 3 of this series with a shot in the closing seconds of overtime to give Miami a one-point victory, attempted a three-point shot at the buzzer to win the series for Miami but it missed. 1. October 23rd, 2000 -- New York Jets 40, Miami Dolphins 37 (OT): ABC called this the best Monday Night Football game ever played. The Jets rallied from a 30-7 fourth quarter deficit, highlighted by Tackle eligible Jumbo Elliott's juggling three-yard TD catch, to defeat Miami. Vinny Testaverde threw three touchdown passes and John Hall booted a 34-yard field goal to allow the Jets to tie the game. But Jay Fiedler hit former Temple Owl Leslie Shepherd with a 46-yard touchdown pass to regain the Dolphins' advantage. Then it was the heroics of Elliott, and we were 37-37 with 42 seconds left in regulation. In the fourth quarter, Marcus Coleman of the Jets intercepted Fiedler but Thurman Thomas forced him to fumble allowing the Dolphins to retain possession. Sure enough, on the Dolphins' ensuing drive, Fiedler was intercepted by Coleman again, setting up Hall's successful 40-yard field goal. Testaverde finished with five touchdown passes. One Dolphins player in the locker room said blatantly, "the refs should be fired." When all was said and done, by season's end the Dolphins won the AFC East; the Jets missed the playoffs. |

The New York Mets loss to Cincinnati on July 31st is the first time I saw the Mets lose at home. They had won their first six home games I attended and would go 9-1 at Shea before losing again. 3. The Oakland A's - NY Yankees playoff game on October 7th represents the first baseball playoff game I ever attended. I have now attended at least one playoff game in each of the four major sports. |
