Top 5 sporting events from 1999

1. The Temple victory over Boston College on October 9th, represented the first time I saw Temple win a college
football game since September 24, 1994. The Owls were on an 0-16 drought. It was also the first time I saw the Owls
win at home since October 27th, 1990.
2. The Niagara - St. Peter's game on January 30th is the only time I've seen a college basketball contest go double
overtime.
3. I went to the St. Peter's - Manhattan men's basketball game in the Bronx five years in a row from 1996 - 2000. This
is the only year St. Peter's won.
4. The June 26th Major League Soccer game between the San Jose Clash and Miami Fusion is the first time I've ever
been to a soccer game.

5. February 25th, 1999 -- New York Knicks 115, Minnesota Timberwolves 113 (OT): This might be the best
regular-season NBA game I've ever been to, although the Knicks double overtime victory over the Dallas Mavericks
two years later certainly rivals it. Allan Houston's three-pointer with 4.6 seconds left in the extra session provides the
final points of this contest and caps a 26-point night for the Knicks guard. The Knicks trailed 54-38 at one point in the
second quarter. The final score represented the most points the Knicks scored and the most scored by a Knicks
opponent in this shortened season.
4. February 21st, 1999 -- St. Peter's Peacocks 68, Manhattan Jaspers 66: This is the game that launched my
career. While I had done radio engineering in the past, I hadn't done it to any great extent -- it was pretty much limited
to Temple Athletics, and the work I did at other games was limited to just stats and reporting -- fun work but I knew I
could expand my horizons and play a greater part in the games I attended. After meeting a contact at Manhattan
College, I felt like a door had been opened and I would start to engineer radio broadcasts at events of all kinds. Next
thing I knew, this contact had me engineer radio broadcasts at the Big East Tournament -- a new era had begun. Oh, by
the way, St. Peter's won this game on a three-point shot by Kalief Allen at the buzzer. The Peacocks led for most of
the way, but Manhattan rallied late to take a one-point lead before the Peacocks' final possession.
3. December 8th, 1999 -- New York Rangers 2, Edmonton Oilers 1 (OT): For all intensive purposes, this is the first
time I played any part in a radio broadcast of a professional sporting event as I was hired to engineer on-site for the
Edmonton Oilers radio network from Madison Square Garden. I got to the 7:30 game at 3:45 and it took me over two
hours to set up the broadcast (a set up similar to tonight's now only takes me about 20 minutes). The scariest part was
after I set up the radio station initially said they said they weren't receiving our feed -- and I wasn't hearing the radio
station. My first broadcast of this "magnitude" and it's going to be screwed up. Well, it turned out to be a simple fix,
and it was actually the station's fault, not mine. But I was mightily stressed out when this night was over. What also
didn't help was the game went in to overtime before Adam Graves' goal ended it 3:15 in to the extra session. But the
broadcast went well, and I survived.
2. May 14th, 1999 -- Miami Heat 87, New York Knicks 72: This game proved that home field advantage means
nothing when these two teams meet. The Knicks held a 2-1 series lead heading in, had beaten Miami in game three by
a whopping 24 points after going on a 32-2 run to break it open and then take a 51-40 lead in the opening minutes of
the third quarter in this contest. But Miami hangs in there, and after trailing 62-58 after three, surge ahead in the fourth
with a 23-4 run. The Knicks wind up scoring just 28 points in the second half Alonzo Mourning and Terry Porter
each scored a game-high 16 points for Miami; Mourning also had 13 rebounds.
1. January 10th, 1999 -- New York Jets 34, Jacksonville Jaguars 24: I wasn't going to be stopped from attending
this game. I had the fifth and final surgery on my leg on December 17th and was recovering in New Haven, Ct. with my
family. But I had never been to an NFL playoff game, had missed the Giants playoff game from the year before, and
had been going to Jets and Giants games regularly since 1995. What helped my cause was the Jets had a bye week
before playing, giving me an extra week to recover. It made a difference and I was on my way to this game, with crutches
and all. As for the game, Jacksonville trailed 31-24, then intercepted a Vinny Testaverde pass in the end zone late in the
fourth to set up a potential game-tying drive. It wasn't meant to be as the Jaguars turned the ball over on downs and John
Hall sealed the win with a 30-yard field goal. The Jets had gotten out to a 17-0 lead in the contest before Jacksonville got
on track just before halftime with a Jimmy Smith 52-yard TD reception from Mark Brunell.
