| 5. March 26th, 1992 -- Kentucky Wildcats 87, Massachusetts Minutemen 77: The Spectrum proved to me it can have a great atmosphere and the NCAA Tournament certainly provided the setting. The most glaring thing I remember about this game is I had to let the Kentucky basketball team in the building as I held their game credentials. And they were somewhat rude and in a rush to get in. But during the game, it was Massachusetts coach John Calipari doing much of the shouting (I sat right behind the bench) as his Minutemen fell short. 4. January 19, 1992 -- Temple Owls 74, St. Joseph's 61: This was the first collegiate game I engineered a radio broadcast on-site and it would serve as my initiation for the upcoming NCAA Tournament which I was needed for if Temple made it. Things went well with the broadcast, Temple qualified for the NCAA Tournament, and I was on my way to Atlanta in March. St. Joseph's led in this game early 17-10 but the Owls went on a 35-9 run to take command. Mik Kilgore scored 22 points for Temple. 3. March 20th, 1992 -- Tulane Green Wave 61, St. John's 57: This was the first game I went to that wasn't in the Northeast part of the country. So this Atlanta affair had a different feel to it, and the upset by the Green Wave helped make it worthwhile. 2. March 20th, 1992 -- East Tennessee State 87, Arizona 80: It's always nice to see a 14-seed beat a #3 in the NCAA Tournament. But what wasn't nice about it was Temple would've played East Tennessee State in the second round had the Owls beaten Michigan. And a trip for me to Lexington, Kentucky would've become very likely. No dice. 1. March 28th, 1992 -- Duke Blue Devils 104, Kentucky Wildcats 103 (OT): This was the best college basketball game of all time. Christian Laettner's miracle shot from the foul line after receiving an inbounds pass from 3/4's court away with 1.4 seconds left in OT broke the hearts of Wildcats fans. You should've seen them just sitting there in the stands with somber, stone-cold looks. Meanwhile, on the other side, writers from the Carolina area hugged each other yelling "I'll see you in Minneapolis" as Duke advanced to the NCAA Final Four. My job was to hand the Duke team its credentials once it arrived at the Spectrum. I'm glad I did my job well. One little flinch by me (like me not being at the gate when the team arrived) could've changed history. |
