1993
Top 5 sporting events from 1993
5.  March 7th, 1993 -- St. Joseph's 71, Rutgers 70:  St. Joseph's had a great season, was the number-two seed in the
Atlantic 10 tournament and was going for its first NCAA bid since 1986.  However, Rutgers gave the Hawks all it could
handle, leading 41-33 at halftime.  St. Joes, which would eventually settle for an NIT bid, finally took the lead for good on
Bernard Blunt's conventional three-point play with 12 seconds left for the Hawks' final points.  Steve Worthy's three-point
try for RU at the buzzer missed.
4.  December 29th, 1993 -- Georgia Tech 71, St. John's 69: It was controversy at the end of the 1993 ECAC
Holiday Festival Championship game.  Ivano Newbill's game-winning shot with 3.6 seconds left clearly came after the
shot-clock buzzer went off...but the officials ruled it counted, and the Yellow Jackets took home the trophy.  I was sitting
courtside, and the amount of fans yelling and screaming down at the refs after the winning shot was more humorous than it
was loud.  I don't remember ever hearing more NY accents yelling at once than I did after that shot was ruled good.
3.  March 14th, 1993 -- Seton Hall 103, Syracuse 70:  Getting to this game was an adventure.  I had never been to the
Big East tournament before, never mind the finale, so it was a big deal to go at the time.  But in order to get there, I had
to pick up my press pass the day before at my job at The Sports Network in Huntingdon Valley, PA.  That meant
driving from Center City, Philadelphia to my work (about 25 miles) in over a foot of snow.  Once I got to work, I
didn't drive home.  I just spent the night at work, then continued on into NY the morning of the game.
2.  May 2nd, 1993 -- NY Mets 5, Philadelphia Phillies 4:  Is it really that big a deal when you come back from three
runs down in the ninth inning to win a game?  Well, it was to this Mets team which was in the middle of a 59-103
season.  Down 4-1, the Mets rallied against Phillies closer Mitch Williams.  Charlie O'Brien capped the rally with a
two-run single.  In the locker room after the game, the Mets were celebrating as if they had won the World Series.  And
considering how many games they won that year, this might as well had been their World Series.  In reality, it was
the Phillies who would go to the World Series this season, but it would be Williams who would give up the series
clinching homer to Joe Carter of Toronto in game 6.
1.  October 3rd, 1993 -- Philadelphia Eagles 35, New York Jets 30:  The day before was my first time ever setting
foot in to Giants Stadium, but it was this game that made the weekend jaunt worthwhile.  Despite losing QB Randall
Cunningham to a season-ending injury in the first half and falling way behind, the Eagles came back to defeat the Jets
The winning score came courtesy of Eric Allen's 94-yard interception return.
Strange facts from 1993
1.  November 21st represents the only time I would see the New York Islanders defeat the Philadelphia Flyers prior to
February 12th, 2008.  Philadelphia would go 11-1-1 against the Islanders prior to 12/12/2008.
