2004
This was taken from the visiting radio broadcast booth at Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Philadelphia Phillies, on the
final day of baseball's regular season, October 3rd.  The picture was snapped and sent to me by one of my favorite
colleagues, Marlins announcer Dave Van Horne.  It was a real pleasure for me to work with the Marlins in the 2003 World
Series at the end of that postseason and to also engineer the team's final radio broadcast in 2004.
Top 5 sporting events from 2004
5.  October 9th, 2004 -- Rutgers Scarlet Knights 37, Vanderbilt Commodores 34: This wound up being the biggest
comeback in Rutgers football history.  Rutgers was trailing 27-3 in the third quarter and then took over in Nashville.  Running
back Brian Leonard scored four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving).  Quarterback Ryan Hart also hit Chris Baker for
a 19-yard score and finished with his second straight 300-yard-plus passing game.  Ah yes, but prosperity doesn't come
easy.  After Leonard's final touchdown, a one-yard scamper with 1:11 left in the contest, Vanderbilt still had one more
chance.  Rutgers defense stiffened, but on fourth down, quarterback Jay Cutler threw a 66-yard pass to Marlon White which
was caught on Rutgers' nine-yard line.  After Cutler was forced to scramble, it looked to me like he might've thrown the ball
from in front of the line of scrimmage.  And sure enough, after much conferring, that's exactly what the officials ruled, and on
the ensuing replay of fourth down, Cutler was sacked and the comeback was complete.  Oh, what a fun plane ride home.
4.  September 4th, 2004 -- Rutgers Scarlet Knights 19, Michigan State 14:  This game marked the largest home
football crowd in Rutgers Stadium history (42,612) and it was definitely a different type of Rutgers home game than what I
had attended in the past.  From the overwhelming Rutgers support (unlike other large crowds at home games which in the
past had more partisanship to the visiting team), to the end of the game on-field celebration, Rutgers had shown it was on the
verge of entering a new era with this result.  All the scoring by RU in this game came from players that didn't play on the 2003
squad.  The big play in the game came with RU leading 9-7 in the third quarter as Ryan Neill returned an interception 31
yards for a touchdown.  Also, freshman Jeremy Ito kicked four field goals in a school-record seven attempts.  On Michigan
State's final possession, Eric Knott fumbled on 4th down at the Rutgers 25-yard line and Terry Bynes for RU recovered the
ball (Michigan State would've fallen short of the first down anyway) and the celebration in front of an ABC audience was
ready to begin.  When the game was over, the RU students stormed the field and the entire stadium -- including the home
team's locker room -- was in jubilation.  In the game, Rutgers rushed the ball 50 times and held a major advantage in
time-of-possession, 40:14 to 19:46 -- and trust me, Michigan State was sucking wind in that fourth quarter.
3.  October 19th, 2004 -- Boston Red Sox 4, New York Yankees 2:  The Boston Red Sox win their third straight game
in the American League Championship Series to force a 7th game.  Just like in the Red Sox's two victories in games 4 and 5
of this series, the game was close, but this time there was some controversy added to it.  With the Red Sox leading 4-2 in the
bottom of the 8th and a runner on first, Alex Rodriguez hit a grounder back to pitcher Carlos Arroyo.  When Arroyo tagged
Rodriguez, the ball came loose and went down the first base line allowing Jeter to score.  However, it was ruled that
Rodriguez intentionally swiped Arroyo's arm as Arroyo made the tag, and Rodriguez instead was out and Jeter had to go
back to first.  This led to the Yankees fans throwing debris all over the field and security manned the foul lines during the top
of the 9th inning.  This was just the latest frustrating situation for the Yankees and their fans over the last four games of this
series and it would lead to Boston's historic game 7 triumph.  Not to be lost in this game was the three-run homer by Mark
Bellhorn in the 4th off Yankee Starter Jon Lieber and a gutsy performance by Boston pitcher Curt Schilling who gave up just
one run through seven innings on a very gimpy foot which would require surgery in the off-season.
2.  March 30th, 2004 -- Rutgers Scarlet Knights 84, Iowa State Cyclones 81 (OT):  Whoever said the NIT
post-season basketball tournament can't be exciting?  For the second straight year, an NIT basketball game has cracked my
top five.  Rutgers held a 10-point lead at halftime as Quincy Douby hit four three-point shots en route to a career-high
35-point night.  Iowa State rallied in the second half as Curtis Stinson finished with 32 points for the Cyclones, who took a
69-66 lead with under three minutes left in regulation.  That's when the game's momentum would go back and forth.  Rutgers
would go on an 8-0 run, thanks in part to another Douby three pointer, to take a 74-69 lead with just 58 seconds left.  But
then it would be Iowa State's turn as Stinson hit a three-pointer of his own, Jake Sullivan nailed a desperation three-point shot
with four seconds left that tied the score at 77-apiece, and finally with only 1.3 seconds remaining, Iowa State inbounded the
ball with a chance to win, but Stinson's 35-foot attempt hit the front of the rim and missed.  In overtime, Stinson would give
Iowa State a two-point lead early, but Rutgers took over, scoring mainly from the foul line, while Stinson fouled out.  Another
desperation Sullivan three-point attempt to once again try to tie the game missed, and Rutgers had its first 20-win season in
over 20 years and was on its way to its first post-season championship game.  What also shouldn't be forgotten was the fan
support RU got at MSG...they pretty much took over the building.
1.  October 20th, 2004 -- Boston Red Sox 10, New York Yankees 3:  The Boston Red Sox complete their
history-making quest by coming back from an 0-3 deficit in the League Championship Series to win in seven games, the first
MLB team ever to come back from three games down to win a series.  Oh sure, who cares if the Yankees may have
grabbed some early momentum in this game by throwing out Johnny Damon at home plate in the first inning?  No one did,
because Damon Ortiz hit the very next pitch in to the right field stands off Kevin Brown for a two-run homer, and the rout
was on.  Damon, who struggled offensively in the first six games of the series, redeemed himself with two homers, including a
grand slam.  Starter Derek Lowe pitched six scoreless innings for Boston, and hardly had to labor.  Sure, his sinker ball was
working like a charm, but the Yankees, just like in last year's World Series Game 6 against the Marlins, failed to exhibit any
patience at the plate and swung at a lot of bad balls.  The Red Sox locker room after the game, needless to say, was a huge
celebration filled with plenty of champagne showers, but it was appropriately tempered by the fact the Red Sox still had a
World Series to win, which they did in four straight games.
Honorable mentions
1.  March 10th, 2004 -- Notre Dame Fighting Irish 65, West Virginia Mountaineers 64 AND Villanova Wildcats 61, Seton
Hall Pirates 60:  A pair of Big East tournament first-round games in the evening doubleheader come down to the final shot.  In
the early game Colin Falls hits a three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining to help Notre Dame fight off a West Virginia
comeback.  In the second game, Villanova pulled off the upset as Randy Foye hit a jumper with 3.6 seconds left to put the
Wildcats on top.
2.  June 30th, 2004 -- New York Yankees 4, Boston Red Sox 2:  In a mini-version of the Bill Buckner play, Red Sox first
baseman David Ortiz's error in the seventh inning when a ground ball goes between his legs sets up the Yankees two-run
rally.  Oh, and Nomar Garciaparra's eighth inning throwing error led to the Yankees winning run.
3.  January 12th, 2004 -- Dallas Mavericks 127, New York Knicks 121 (OT):  The New York Knicks come back from 20
points down in the third quarter ... and then by six with 11 seconds left in regulation, before running out of gas and losing in
overtime.  The Knicks forced the extra session after Stephon Marbury hit three foul shots with 10.7 seconds left to pull the
Knicks to within three.  Marbury then deflects Dallas' Steve Nash's inbounds pass, leading to Allan Houston's game-tying
three-point field goal.
4.  May 11th, 2004 -- New York Yankees 8, Anaheim Angels 7 (10):  It doesn't happen very often when either Mariano
Rivera of the Yankees or Troy Percival of the Angels blow saves.  But they both do in the same game.  The Yankees led 6-5
in the 9th before Bengie Molina of Anaheim hit a two-run homer off Rivera to give Anaheim the advantage.  However, off of
Percival in the bottom of the 9th, Ruben Sierra singled home the tying run.  Gary Sheffield's RBI double in the 10th won it for
New York.  The game took six hours to play, including an over two-hour rain delay.
5.  April 21, 2004 -- Florida Marlins 8, Philadelphia Phillies 7 (12):  In a four hour, 30 minute marathon, the Marlins stormed
back from four runs down to defeat the Phillies.  Mike Lowell hit three home runs for the Marlins, including the tying homer in
the top of the 9th to force the extra frames.
6.  March 3rd, 2004 -- Virginia Tech Hokies 71, Rutgers Scarlet Knights 70:  Rutgers is unable to hold a 15-point advantage
with over 12 minutes to play.  But the Hokies are also unable to hold on to a four-point lead with two minutes left and it takes
a Coleman Collins rebound put back for the Hokies at the buzzer to clinch its first -- and only -- trip to the Big East
tournament.
7.  November 14th, 2004 -- Baltimore Ravens 20, New York Jets 17 (OT):  Maybe if Jets coach Herman Edwards
followed his own advice to "play to win the game," then this contest's outcome might've been different.  With the Jets trailing
17-14 and eight seconds remaining, they had third and goal from the Baltimore five-yard line following an incomplete pass.
But because they couldn't get the play call in on time, they were forced to call their final timeout and settle for a tying field goal
try.  Matt Stover would then win the game for Baltimore in OT with a field goal of his own.  What also didn't help the Jets'
cause was when they led 14-0 and were driving again but opted for a halfback option pass in to the end zone by Lamont
Jordan that was intercepted by Ed Reed.
8.  March 29th, 2004 -- New York Knicks 92, Portland Trail Blazers 91 -- Controversy surfaces as Stephon Marbury is
awarded three free throws after being fouled on what is called a three-point attempt with 1:24 left in the game.  However,
replays may have shown that Marbury's foot was on the three-point line when he went up for the shot.
9.  September 3rd, 2004 -- New York Jets 28, Philadelphia Eagles 27 -- Not bad for a preseason game.  The Jets score
three touchdowns with 5:14 left in the game to win.
Strange facts from 2004
1.  The University of Miami's victory over St. John's was the first time I saw the Hurricanes win a basketball game since
March 4th, 1999.  The Hurricanes had lost 10 games in a row I attended since then.
2.  The St. John's victory over Georgetown on February 18th makes the Red Storm 3-0 against the Hoyas in games I've seen
them play against each other.
3.  The Virginia Tech game in the Big East Tournament on March 10th represents the first time I've seen the Hokies
basketball team play a game that wasn't in Blacksburg, Va.  The game also improved the Hokies record to 4-0 all-time in
games I've seen the Hokies play in.
4.  The NY Islanders game on March 19th and the NY Dragons contest on March 20th represents the first time I've been to
the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y. on back-to-back days.
5.  The April 12th NHL playoff game is the first NY Islanders playoff game I ever attended.  It's also the first time since the
1994 Stanley Cup Finals I attended an NHL playoff game not played at the New Jersey Meadowlands.  The previous 16
NHL playoff games I attended were a NJ Devils home game.
6.  April 20th represented the first time I ever saw the Florida Marlins defeat the Philadelphia Phillies.  The Phillies had won
the first nine games I attended between the clubs.
7.  April 25th is the first time I've ever been to a NY/NJ Metrostars soccer game.
8.  The Anaheim Angels - NY Yankees game on August 21st had a 3:42 rain delay, the longest rain delay I ever sat through.
9.  The New York Liberty went 5-1 in the six games they played at Radio City Music Hall this year.  I was at all five Liberty
wins and missed the one Liberty loss.
10.  The Connecticut - Rutgers football game from November 25th represents the first time I went to a sporting event on
Thanksgiving Day.
11.  Air Force on December 31st became the 6th college basketball arena I visited for the first time in less than six weeks
(other five were -- Niagara, UNC-Charlotte, Hofstra, Princeton and Kansas State).

Forget Mark Cuban, the owner of
the Dallas Mavericks who is
standing up yelling at the
Mavericks - NJ Nets game from
March 21st.  You should be
focusing in on the very bottom
left.  That's me, in the black shirt,
sitting courtside engineering the
Mavericks radio broadcast at the
game.  This picture appeared on
page 14 in the April 22nd issue of
"Sports Illustrated On Campus."
It's a magazine I never read, but I
just happened to pick up a copy
while killing time in Philadelphia
on April 21st.  What are the odds
I would see myself in that edition?
