At the University of Illinois prior to the Rutgers - Illinois football game on Labor Day Weekend to start off
the 2005 season. This would be the first ever college football overtime game I would attend. It would also
be the 48th of 49 consecutive Rutgers football games I attended, a streak that started back during
Thanksgiving Weekend, 2000 and would end two weeks after the Illinois contest.
Top 5 sporting events from 2005

5. June 11th, 2005 -- New York Mets 5, LA Angels of Anaheim 3 (10): How often does it happen when a ball is
hit home run distance in fair territory but winds up not being a homer, while another ball not reaching the fences winds
up being a round tripper? And both happen in the same game? Well, it happened in this affair. It was Marlon
Anderson's inside the park homer in the 9th inning off of Francisco Rodriguez that allowed the Mets to tie this game up
at two-apiece in the bottom of the 9th inning. Then, after the Angels took the lead in the 10th, Cliff Floyd hit a
three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to win it. What also helped the Mets was when Carlos Beltran made an
over-the-wall catch to rob Bengie Molina of a homer in the 7th inning. It wasn't just the game itself that made this
interesting but it was where I sat for the game. I worked in TV and that allowed me to view this game from the
photographer's pit at Shea Stadium right along the third-base line...and boy, what a difference in atmosphere it was
compared to the press box.
4. August 27th, 2005 -- New York Yankees 8, Kansas City Royals 7: This was the first time I've seen a team
come back from four runs down in the 9th inning to win (not that that's saying much). With the Yankees down 7-3 with
a runner on first base and one out in the 9th, what opened the floodgates was when Jorge Posada hit a potential
game-ending double-play ground ball back to pitcher Jeremy Affeldt. But Affeldt threw the ball wildly to second base
and everyone was safe. From there, Tino Martinez would single home a run, Derek Jeter added a two-run single, and
then Gary Sheffield hit a game-tying double. Finally, Alex Rodriguez singled home the game-winning run. Imagine...the
Yankees having a five-run rally that didn't consist of a homer. Lost in the game was the Yankees actually took an early
three-run lead in the contest before KC scored seven unanswered runs behind three RBI's by Mike Sweeney.
3. December 27th, 2005 -- Arizona State 45, Rutgers Scarlet Knights 40: If Rutgers had been able to hold on
to a victory in this game, this probably would've been my number-one sporting event of the year. But Rutgers first
appearance in a bowl game since 1978 was not disappointing, and neither was the RU fan turnout. Downtown
Phoenix, Arizona (where I had never been to) was bleeding in Rutgers red (or scarlet) and the RU pre-game tailgate
was a site any Rutgers fan wouldn't have believed if they hadn't seen it in person. In front of over 10,000 Rutgers fans
(and a sold out Chase Field), Rutgers would take a 24-10 lead. However, this game wound up being an offensive
shootout by both teams, who combined for an NCAA bowl-game record 1,211 yards. Brian Leonard scored two
touchdowns for Rutgers and kicker Jeremy Ito added four field goals. Arizona State's quarterback Rudy Carpenter
completed 23-of-35 passes for 457 yards and four touchdowns.
2. October 1st, 2005 -- New York Yankees 8, Boston Red Sox 4: This game also had a shot at being my
number-one sporting event of the year, but it wound up being the best sporting event I attended but never really saw.
The Yankees clinched the American League East title this day, but I didn't even know that was possible until just before
the game started. Engineering the Yankees radio broadcast from Fenway Park, I knew the Yankees could clinch the
division if they won and the Indians lost and thus in that scenario I would have to set up equipment in the Yankees
clubhouse so we can do our full-post game show from there amidst the celebration.....but I thought based on what
MLB.COM told me the night before that the Indians would play on Saturday night. So, I figured that even if the
Yankees won in the afternoon, they couldn't clinch the division -- or the playoffs -- until later that night. So, sure
enough just before the Yankees game started, I found out the Indians game was being played in the afternoon. Egads,
I hadn't set up any equipment in the locker room in anticipation of a clinching celebration. So, when it became more
apparent as the day wore on that the Yankees could in fact clinch the division on this day, I got somebody else to run
the broadcast upstairs for me, while I went downstairs around the 6th inning to set up equipment in the clubhouse. It all
paid off. The Indians lost about 15 minutes before the Yankees would defeat the Red Sox and clinch their eighth
straight AL East crown. Our post-game show from the Yankees champagne soaked clubhouse worked perfectly and
drew some praise from the big cheeses over at WCBS. Nevertheless, it was one of the most stressful days I ever had
as a radio engineer, thus I just can't make this the #1 sporting event of the year (plus the game itself wasn't really that
close). But I will look back at this day as a day I conquered, as weird as that may sound. Adding to the day was that
I also engineered Mike and the Mad Dog's Saturday show on WFAN...thus, I arrived at the ballpark at about 8:00
a.m. (for a 9:00 airtime) and didn't leave until 6:40 that night (about 10 minutes after Mike and Dog signed off with their
post-game show).
1. July 31st, 2005 -- New York Yankees 8, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 7 (11): OK, so how is it that in a
year I go to my first college bowl game and also get to travel with the Yankees, that a supposedly normal looking
regular-season Yankees home game when I worked with LA Spanish radio winds up being my top sporting event of
the year? Well, remember, it's based on my enjoyment of the game, combined with how good the game itself is. And
this one met all the criteria in 2005 more than any other. First the Yankees scored four runs in the bottom of the 8th to
tie the score at 6-6, thanks in part to Darin Erstad's error. In the 9th, Andy Phillips of the Yanks made a bid for the
game-winning RBI, but his hard ground ball with two outs and a runner on 2nd was speared by third baseman
Macieras Izturas who threw in time to first, forcing extra innings. Then, after the Yankees fell behind 7-6 in the top of
the 10th, they appeared finished when Gary Sheffield hit a hard ground ball to shortstop with a runner on 2nd and two
outs. However, the ball glanced off of Orlando Cabrera's glove, and so instead of the game being over, Bernie
Williams scored the tying run and the game would go on to the 11th. Tony Womack finally drove in the winning run for
the Yankees to end the four hours and 20 minutes of fun.
1. January 8th, 2005 -- Pittsburgh Panthers 66, Rutgers Scarlet Knights 63 (OT) -- Ricky Shields hits a game-tying
three-pointer with 0.4 seconds left to force OT for Rutgers, but the Panthers prevail in the extra session.
2. March 9th, 2005 -- Rutgers Scarlet Knights 72, Notre Dame Fighting Irish 65 -- Rutgers salvages something out of
a lost season by winning its first Big East tournament game since 1999. Ricky Shields scores 21 points, including the
first four points in RU's game-ending 8-0 run, ruining Notre Dame's NCAA tournament bid.
3. January 21st, 2005 -- Houston Rockets 92, New York Knicks 91 -- Scott Padgett's running one-hander at the
buzzer gives Houston the win. The Knicks in the closing seconds have a one-point lead and the ball, but are called for a
24-second shot clock violation, giving the Rockets one last chance.
4. February 28th, 2005 -- New York Knicks 117, LA Lakers 115 (OT): I had never seen the Lakers lose before this
game, and a 14-2 run by LA with 1:20 left in regulation to force OT could've kept that streak going. Kobe Bryant hit a
three-pointer with five seconds left to force the extra period. The Lakers had the ball with a chance to tie the game in
the closing seconds of OT but never got a shot off. I'll never forget the disgust shown by Bryant as he angrily slammed
the ball down on the court in anger at one of his teammates and stormed off the court.
5. April 16th, 2005 -- New York Mets 4, Florida Marlins 3: I was hoping this game would end quickly because I had
a MetroStars game to get to later that evening. But extra innings seemed inevitable with the game tied in the bottom of
the 9th with nobody on base and two outs. But the unlikely combination of a Victor Diaz double and a Ramon Castro
RBI single abruptly ended the game. And I got to the MetroStars game in plenty of time.
6. June 15th, 2005 -- New York Yankees 7, Pittsburgh Pirates 5 (10): This game should've, or at least could've been
over, if the Pirates, leading by a run, didn't botch a double-play ball hit by Gary Sheffield. Sheffield, with a runner on
first and one out in the bottom of the 9th, lined a ball off of the pitcher's leg and was picked up by shortstop Jack
Wilson. After the Pirates recorded the out at second, the relay throw to first arrived at the same time as Sheffield.
Replays showed that Sheffield may have been out, but it was that close, and he was ruled safe. That allowed the inning
to continue and the Yankees would go on to tie the game, before Jason Giambi won it in the 10th with a two-run homer.
7. June 21st, 2005 -- New York Yankees 20, Tampa Bay Devil Rays 11: Yankees complete an eight-run comeback
by scoring 13 in the bottom of the 8th in what would be the highest scoring baseball game I ever attended.
8. July 4th, 2005 -- New York Yankees 13, Baltimore Orioles 8: My debut engineering a Major League Baseball
national broadcast on ESPN Radio. And ESPN certainly gets its money's worth with me as the Yankees blow a 6-0
lead, but still come out on top in a nine-inning game that lasts 4:12.
9. July 30th, 2005 -- New York Yankees 8, LA Angels 7: In a game that would precede my #1 sporting event of the
year -- and also finish with the same score -- Hideki Matsui's two-run double caps a three-run bottom of the 9th as the
Yankees rally from behind. This was my second broadcast with ESPN Radio, and the game time of 3:43 wasn't much
shorter than my ESPN Radio baseball debut.
10. September 3rd, 2005 -- Illinois 33, Rutgers 30 (OT): It was a fun game to watch, and my first ever college
football overtime game, but Rutgers blows a 20-point lead in the third quarter en route to losing its college football
season opener.
11. October 10th, 2005 -- LA Angels 5, New York Yankees 3: Yankees take a 2-0 lead in the deciding game of the
ALDS, but a collision in right field by Bubba Crosby and Gary Sheffield on a fly ball hit by Adam Kennedy plated two
runs and gave the Angels the lead for good.
12. October 23rd, 2005 -- New York Giants 24, Denver Broncos 23: The Giants score two touchdowns in the last
9:07 to rally from 13-points down. Eli Manning's two-yard touchdown pass to Amani Toomer with five seconds left
was the difference.
13. October 29th, 2005 -- Rutgers Scarlet Knights 31, Navy Midshipmen 21: Rutgers gains bowl eligibity -- and an
ounce of revenge against a Navy Midshipmen team that embarrassed it last year -- as the fans storm the field and tear
the goal posts down after the game.
14. October 31st, 2005 -- Montreal Canadiens 4, New York Rangers 1: My first hockey game since the lockout.
Ah, life is good again.
1. February 28th represented the first time I saw the LA Lakers lose a game. The Lakers had won the previous four
games I saw them play in.
2. The Rutgers - Illinois game on September 3rd is the first college football game I ever attended that went overtime.
3. February 5th represented the first time I ever attended a game at Gampel Pavilion, meaning I have now been to every
Big East Men's basketball facility for a game (not including Walsh Gym at Seton Hall or McDonough Arena at
Georgetown). However, this fact will change with the addition of five new Big East teams in 2005-'06.
4. April 1st was the first time I attended a New Jersey Nets road game since April 19, 1994.
5. I did not attend a sporting event from July 5th - July 26th, the longest period I had gone without attending a sporting
event since March 12th - April 6th of 2000.
6. The June 21st Tampa Bay -- NY Yankees game is the highest scoring baseball game I've ever attended. It is also the
first time in a nine-inning game that both teams scored runs in double digits (the May 17th, 2002 game between the
Minnesota Twins and NY Yankees had a final score of 13-12, but the game was tied at 9-9 after nine innings). This is also
the first time I saw a team rally from eight runs down to win a game.
7. The September 13th game between the Yankees and Tampa Bay Devil Rays is the first time I saw the Yankees play on
the road. This also means I have seen every New York and Philadelphia area pro team play at least one road game.
8. The October 4th Yankees - LA Angels game is the first MLB playoff game I attended that wasn't played at Yankee
Stadium.
9. That same October 4th game is the first professional sporting event I've attended that wasn't in the Eastern Time Zone.
10. The Washington Wizards victory over the NY Knicks on November 4th represents the first time I saw the
Wizards/Bullets franchise win a game. Washington had lost the previous six games I attended.
